This is the best and easiest red velvet waffles recipe! If you want a gorgeous, chocolate-y breakfast with a deep, red colour, then this recipe should be your go-to.

When you’re feeling down and WAFFLE about yourself, turn to this gorgeous red velvet recipe!

One of my husband’s all-time favourite desserts is… drum roll… anything having to do with red velvet! In fact, he loves it so much that we requested it for our beautiful 5-tier wedding cake.

Recently, we purchased a waffle iron and he’s been on a waffle kick. The other weekend, I decided to treat him by taking over waffle duties. I made a batch of homemade red velvet waffles – and they were a hit!

What’s special about my red velvet waffles recipe is that it’s entirely from scratch. Most of the ones out there use a red velvet cake mix (which I find absolutely brilliant!), but I decided to go the traditional route and make it 100% homemade.

What Is Red Velvet, Anyway?

Red velvet is a batter that consists of cocoa powder, vinegar, and a generous amount of red coloring. Yep: red velvet is essentially a chocolate cake. The chemical reaction between the vinegar and the batter’s milk/buttermilk is what helps create the dessert’s gorgeous deep red colour.

What Kind of Food Colouring Should I Use to Make Red Velvet Desserts?

The best tint to use when whipping up red velvet cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts are gel food colours. Water-based food colouring just wouldn’t form enough color.

Gel food colours, also known as liquid gel dyes, are easily accessible to the everyday consumer. Other food-grade dyes like gel paste dyes or powder dyes are trickier to find. I have an entire section in my pantry for my various shades of liquid gel dyes. They’re fantastic for colouring icing and fondant, too.
